Species
Excellent
South-East Asian coffee, acid and fruity, the classification of which is discussed: variety of liberic or own species, Coffea dewevrei?
- Caffeine (green bean)
- 0.9–1.1 %
In the cup
- Red fruit
- Dried fruit
- Winey
The excellent is a little known coffee outside South-East Asia, where it is grown in small quantities. His great curiosity is botanical: there is no agreement on exactly what it is.
For a long time it was considered a separate species. In 2006 it was reclassified as a variety of the liberic. But a 2025 genomic study, led by the Royal Botanical Garden of Kew, defends that it is a different species, Coffea dewevrei. The debate is still open.
In the cup is very particular: acid, fruity and dark at the same time. A difficult combination to find in other cafes.
- Cafein: according to some sources, between 0.9 and 1.1% of the green grain.
- Production: very small.
- Region: Southeast Asia.
If you ever find excellent, try it alone and, if you like, mix with another coffee. In French press or AeroPress your contrasts are well appreciated. It is a good example that the world of coffee is wider than arabic and robust.
This coffee bar runs on coffee… literally. And the odd ko‑fi.
