Kalita Wave

Flat bottom drip with three holes. More tolerant than V60: balanced and sweet cup even if the spill is not perfect.

The Kalita Wave is a flat bottom drip with three small holes and a wavy filter that barely touches the walls. The coffee forms a flat bed and the water comes out more evenly than in a cone, so the discharge errors are less noticed.

For model 185: 21 g of medium ground coffee and 355 g of water at 94-97 ° C. Pour 50 g, wait 15 seconds, add another 50 g and continue with pulses of 50 g every 25 seconds, more or less. It ends between 3: 00 and 3: 30.

  • In favor: constant results; good to start with manual drip.
  • In favor: sweet and balanced cup.
  • Against: the wavy filters are specific and deformed if you squeeze them.
  • Against: something less brilliant than a well-done V60.

There are two sizes: 155, for one cup, and 185, for one or two, which is the most versatile. Steel, glass or ceramic models cost €25-45 and filters, €8-12 the 100 package. The steel does not break and weighs little.

Cheapest alternative: a Melitta cone, which also has a narrow exit and forgives quite a lot.

This coffee bar runs on coffee… literally. And the odd ko‑fi.
